The age-old question among sports bettors is "what is the best strategy for success?" The most proficient handicappers and sports experts will agree on what is called a "unit system." Although some will argue over how many units to have in a system, there is no argument that one is needed to best manage your money and to wager the safest amount on the right games.
* First, as in any endeavor, success should be the first goal.
* Secondly, one must install a system and use the proper tools to achieve the first.
Sports wagering is a lot like any investment market, whether it be stocks, mutual funds, real estate or the like. One must always keep in mind that there are varying degrees of risk and reward depending on how much an individual understands the market and how much risk, or capital, should be deployed in order to achieve the greatest deal of success. The idea is to garner success over the long term and to recognize that there are peaks and valleys along the way. This is where, in sports wagering, the unit system comes into play.
At Mason Dixon Sports (MDS) we operate using a unit system to mark the degree of risk that should be used for a particular call on an event. For simple mathematical purposes we will describe a unit as $100. A one unit play would mean a wager of $100, or $110 to win $100. Two units would mean $200, or $220 to win $200, etc. Therefore 5 units would mean a risk of $500, or $550 to win $500. The amount used for a unit varies from player to player depending on their ability or desire to risk comfortably. For some a unit may be $25, for others it may be $50, some $500, $1,000 or more.
The majority of picks we release will be of the one, two, or three unit variety, with others measuring four or five. The 4-5 unit picks our sports advisers see as big games for a particular sport where one side of the match-up stands-out given the surrounding circumstances and analysis of the teams involved against the spread or total. These games often carry what is called a "mistake" in Vegas, where a particular line or total does not match the teams or event at hand.
Simply put, a unit system is the key to success. However, it must be exercised with order and discipline. As in any market there are ups and downs. Sports wagering is no different. Players should never get too aggressive during winning streaks and never, ever panic by chasing losses. Discipline and wise money management is the best way to operate and will enhance your bankroll using this system.
